<table><tbody><tr><td><ul><li>The US30, also known as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, is a stock market index that measures the stock performance of 30 large, blue-chip companies trading on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.</li><li>Geographic risk diversification i.e. a UK, Asian or European investor wanting to lower their risk by venturing offshore into the US market where there are different macro-economic conditions compared to their home country.</li><li>If one is bullish on the US’s prospects, the DOW30 can serve as a proxy for the health of the broader U.S. economy.</li><li>Thematic play; given the US30’s large tilt towards cyclical sectors such as financials, materials and industrials – one may want to buy this index or alternatively short based on views surrounding the reflation trade and economic fundamentals.</li><li>The US30 has lots of large multinational exporters, hence their price, and the US30 will fluctuate with the value of the dollar (usually inversely correlated). So, one could use the US30 to express a view on the dollar.</li><li>The US30 could be used for day trading, as it offers ample price swings to profit from and is liquid with tight spreads, allowing traders to keep their costs down.</li><li>Lastly, the US30 can be used to hedge cash single stock positions.</li></ul></td></tr></tbody></table>

Why invest in the US30?

<table><tbody><tr><td><ul><li>General economic performance in the US, i.e. economic releases of GDP growth, inflation, retail sales, Purchasing Managers’ Indices, Non-Farm Payrolls etc.</li><li>US Central Bank’s monetary policies, such as quantitative easing and reducing their interest rates, which boosts share prices.</li><li>Global market moves, i.e. problems in Asia and Europe could spill over into the US. Usually the US markets’ effects tends to spill over to the rest of the world.</li><li>US specific issues, such as political instability.</li><li><a href="https://eu-app.contentstack.com/market-analysis/us-earnings-season/">Earnings reports</a> from companies within the US30. United Health Group currently has a 7% weighting, so positive or negative news from that company will have an effect on the overall index.</li><li>Reflation is the hot topic currently with sectors, like financials, industrials and materials benefiting from flows to capture the reflation theme. Given the US30’s composition, it would benefit from these thematic flows.</li><li>ETF and passive tracker funds buying the individual companies in the index to track the US30 for investors.</li><li>Lastly, a weaker dollar would increase the value of offshore revenues when they’re translated back into local currency (dollars).
