Key takeaways

  • SpaceX reports Q3 earnings after Tuesday's US close
  • Bloomberg consensus expects revenue of $12.89bn, adjusted EPS of $0.149 and EBITDA of $6.62bn.
  • AI monetisation, capex guidance and future financing requirements will likely matter more than headline earnings.
  • The stock faces further shareholder lock-up expiries, while Starship Flight 15 offers a potentially significant catalyst.
  • Options pricing implies a -/+6.8% 1-day move in the share price in reaction to earnings.

SpaceX earnings: Growth is expected, but conviction is lacking

SpaceX heads into its Q3 earnings with expectations elevated, investor conviction less assured and the share price struggling to establish a sustainable bid.

At Friday’s close of $146.03, the stock had fallen 15.1% from its 6 October close of $171.92, sitting almost 28% below its June record closing high. The decline comes as investors reassess AI infrastructure valuations, borrowing costs and whether enormous capital expenditure programmes can generate acceptable returns.

The question is whether SpaceX can deliver enough operational momentum to attract buyers, or whether another strong earnings report becomes an opportunity for existing shareholders to reduce exposure.

There is precedent for caution. Following its August Q2 release, shares fell 13.6% despite impressive revenue growth. The market wants evidence that extraordinary growth can translate into sustainable returns on capital.

Bloomberg consensus: An extraordinary growth trajectory

Revenue is expected to increase around 65% from Q2, with EBITDA almost doubling. That acceleration is impressive, but it raises the bar for a positive surprise. The composition of growth, quality of earnings and management's forward guidance will matter more than a modest EPS beat.

AI compute: Can SpaceX monetise its ambitions?

AI is arguably the biggest driver of the immediate earnings reaction. Consensus anticipates approximately $6.4bn in AI revenue, with attention focused on how quickly installed compute capacity converts into contracted revenue and operating profit.

Management has targeted more than 2GW of compute capacity by year-end and 5–10GW by the end of 2027. Progress towards the upper end would be welcomed, but installed capacity and commercially productive capacity are very different propositions.

Revenue per watt, utilisation, customer pricing and contract duration will be important indicators of economic returns.

Recent weakness in CoreWeave and other neocloud operators, alongside Gartner's warnings about AI infrastructure profitability, has sharpened investor scrutiny. SpaceX benefits from diversified operations and substantial liquidity, but the underlying question remains: will AI compute generate returns sufficient to justify the capital invested?

Capex and funding: The numbers that could dictate the reaction

For me, this is the critical part of the release.

Bloomberg consensus expects Q3 capex of $19.61bn, up from $18.37bn in Q2, with free cash flow forecast at negative $11.6bn.

Spending broadly in line with expectations, accompanied by evidence of a more manageable future trajectory, could support the stock. Another material capex surprise or higher forward spending guidance risks reigniting concerns over cash burn.

SpaceX has substantial cash reserves, but investors are increasingly focused on cumulative funding requirements through 2027–29. Its $20bn bridge loan matures in September 2027, making refinancing plans and the cost of additional borrowing important considerations.

With credit markets becoming more discriminating towards AI infrastructure borrowers, the price of financing growth is becoming almost as important as growth itself.

Starlink and Starship: Potential upside catalysts

Starlink remains an important earnings anchor. Consensus expects approximately $4.9bn in connectivity revenue and 14.3 million consumer subscribers. Subscriber additions, average revenue per user and direct-to-cell progress will shape expectations for future profitability.

Starship could deliver the more powerful catalyst. Following September's successful Flight 14, investors await details of Flight 15, potentially in early November – this is key for investors.

Confirmation of an attempt to catch the returning upper stage would advance the case for rapid reusability, lower launch costs and improved deployment economics. A successful demonstration could ultimately carry greater valuation significance than a quarterly earnings beat.

Shareholder supply and technical levels

Approximately 1.3 billion shares become eligible for sale around Q3 earnings, with further lock-up releases expected through year-end and a major expiry on 8 December.

Eligibility does not guarantee selling, and previous releases have been absorbed relatively well. Nevertheless, additional supply could restrain rallies, particularly if investors use positive earnings news to realise gains.

Technically, immediate support sits around $140–143. A break would expose the $120–130 region, with the August closing low near $108 a deeper downside reference.

On the upside, $150–155 is the first resistance zone. A sustained recovery through $160–165 would improve the near-term picture, while $172 remains the more significant hurdle.

The trading setup: Where the risks sit

The market appears positioned for solid operational results, particularly in AI, leaving limited room for a merely respectable beat.

The bullish scenario combines stronger compute revenue, reassuring capex guidance, credible financing commentary and progress towards Starship's next milestone.

The bearish scenario is another quarter where extraordinary growth is overshadowed by escalating spending, negative free cash flow and shareholder supply.

SpaceX doesn't need to convince investors that its opportunity is enormous. It needs to demonstrate that the economic returns can justify the extraordinary capital committed to capturing it.

That is where the real battle between buyers and sellers will take place.
