Meta Q326 earnings preview: Can earnings deliver the catalyst for a breakout?

So why the investor enthusiasm?

Investors increasingly see Meta as an AI monetisation winner, rather than simply an AI spender. Its advertising engine is already benefiting from AI, while Muse, business agents and compute rentals introduce potential new revenue streams. The market has rewarded what AI could deliver, but earnings now need to validate that optimism.

The numbers: What Wall Street expects

Bloomberg median estimates point to Q3 revenue of $63.29bn, adjusted EPS of $6.85, operating income of $18.53bn and EBITDA of $26.99bn. Gross margin is seen at 80.16%, capex at $40.97bn and free cash flow at negative $9.14bn.

The Street expects $73.56bn of Q4 revenue, making the next-quarter outlook especially important. Q3 operating margin is implied at roughly 29.3%, versus 40.1% a year earlier. Revenue growth remains impressive; the cost of delivering it is increasingly difficult to ignore.

AI spending: Where is the return?

Meta has guided 2026 capex to $130bn–$145bn, almost double the prior year. The bullish case is that this investment creates a lasting advantage in models, infrastructure and user engagement. The bearish case is that spending is racing ahead of demonstrable cash returns.

Some projections put 2027 expenses at $211bn and free cash flow more than $30bn in the red. Investors can be increasingly enthusiastic about Meta’s long-term opportunities while simultaneously marking down near-term earnings. Any further acceleration in 2027 investment without a credible payback narrative risks testing that enthusiasm.

Advertising and Muse: From engagement to revenue

The core franchise is still doing the heavy lifting. Q2 advertising revenue rose 27% year-on-year, with impressions up 14% and average price per ad up 12%. AI-driven recommendations and targeting are translating into measurable commercial benefits.

Muse, Wonder, Business Agents and potential compute rentals offer another dimension. The crucial distinction is between adoption and monetisation. Product announcements may excite investors, but management needs to quantify usage, customer demand and, ultimately, revenue and margins.

The technical setup: Which way does the $60 range break?

After surging from around $550 to $780 between August and September, Meta has spent recent weeks consolidating in a roughly $60 range. Holding most of that advance is constructive: sellers have not yet forced a meaningful retracement.

A sustained break above $780 could bring $800+ into play and attract momentum buying. A loss of the approximate $710 range floor could instead trigger profit-taking and a reassessment of the AI premium. Broad sentiment and appetite for AI risk will influence the outcome, but Meta’s relative performance remains impressive in isolation.

Options and positioning: The event-risk test

Options imply an earnings-event move of approximately ±4.1%, against a supplied eight-quarter average absolute earnings-day move of 7.4%. On that comparison, event pricing looks relatively subdued, although the two measures are not identical.

Meta has closed higher after four of its past eight quarterly reports, underscoring that an earnings beat alone does not guarantee a rally.

Trading the reaction: Guidance matters more than the beat

My bias is that the hurdle for a sustained upside reaction is higher than headline consensus suggests. Revenue at or above $64bn, margins ahead of expectations, a constructive Q4 outlook and concrete evidence of AI monetisation would strengthen the bullish case. Softer guidance or another sharp capex upgrade could prompt selling even alongside a Q3 beat.

The question is not simply whether Meta delivers another strong quarter. It is whether management can show that extraordinary AI investment is moving closer to extraordinary financial returns.
